He graduated from King Edward Medical College, Lahore and joined Army Medical Corps after serving briefly in Khyber Medical College, Peshawar. After completing post graduate training in pathology in AFIP, he was selected for further training at University of Maryland in USA. He obtained American Board certification in Anatomic Pathology. After his return, he worked as a consultant pathologist.
He remained Head of Department of Anatomic Pathology at AFIP from 1975-92 and commanded the institute from1988-92. He became Surgeon General and Director General Medical Services in 1992 and retired from this post in 1994. During his service tenure, he paid special attention to reorganizing post graduate teaching and research. His main interests have been the neoplasia in Pakistan.
He has worked and published extensively on this subject. His monograph on Pattern of Malignant Tumours provides very detailed information about epidemiology of tumours in Northern Pakistan. Another monograph, “Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma- Perspective in Pakistan”, provides the clinico-pathologic spectrum of these tumors in the country. He was conferred fellowship by College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Royal College of Pathologists and Royal College of Physicians (Edin). Lt. Gen. Manzoor Ahmad HI (M) Retd. is the director of Health Ways Laboratories since 1994.
